The twist works because you can replace K. Rool with any sort of ancient evil and the plot would largely play out exactly the same. Void is consumed by his greed and unleashes something that he shouldn't which ends being his undoing, and afterwards it's up to the heroes to clean up the mess, it's fairly basic video game plot stuff that works.

In comparison things like General Scales in Star Fox Adventures and Ganondorf in Twilight Princess don't work as well because in the former's case, he doesn't even get to exist in actual gameplay and Andross being revived literally comes out of nowhere (even Dinosaur Planet's version of the story, which similarly has Scales as merely a pawn to a greater threat) does a far better job building up to Drakor and eventually the Krazoa). Meanwhile in TP's case, Zant goes from a serious and intimidating antagonist to being a weird joke before being unceremoniously replaced by Ganondorf who's just boring because he has no connection to Midna or any of the other characters the way Zant did and just shows up because they wanted to pander to OOT fanboys.
