I think you misunderstand. It's not based because it's "better" somehow, because it's not. Vacuforming is an extremely cheap and fast manufacturing process. Model kits aren't it's strengths, but I think it's very underutilized for dioramas and scenery. Garage kits too, although 3d printing is now at a point where even a high quality home printer is similar cost to a heated vacuforming table. Vacuforming is still widely used in packaging, inserts, and other applications. I know of only one company still manufacturing vacuformed diorama and wargames scenary, and they are based in the UK.
