A Treachery of Swans by A. B. Poranek is a book I was interested in solely because I really liked Barbie of Swan Lake as a child. As a queer retelling it has pretty great romance, the only problem being that you have to read 100 pages of court intrigue and set up, before you get that. Which, I enjoyed it for the most part, but as this is a single perspective book, it felt a bit like a slog as there's no breaking it up with swan princess yearning or similar. The prose in the book feels half baked, you can really tell where the author was pushing themselves to create vivid imagery and where they couldn't care less. The side characters are serviceable but do not feel 3 dimensional. Still, I really enjoyed reading this book despite its problems, probably because I just like swan lake a lot, 7:10.

As a teacher, I can attest that while a majority of students do not enjoy or value reading, there will always be kids that are book worms. I am sure at least a few queer kids read and appreciated that book and books like them.

The Gideon cover is butch but she still looks like a woman. The one on the left of that cover literally just looks like a man. The choice to just have the character's silhouettes was a bad one.
