It's pretty much as >>533955369 said. I initially tried to make an aerodynamic looking arrow ship but very quickly gave up as it became evident that I would have to reimagine the shape every time I wanted to expand. With the saucer it was much simpler: just make it bigger and rebuild the exterior wall over it.
I installed the turrets at the front in the last minute before I left to land at this end-game area. They aren't incredible but are good enough. Also remember to put floors inside your spaceship. It makes things much cozier.
