I have never heard of Shia uplifting the living as ineffable, only the dead. But the veneration of the dead goes back to Zoroastrianism and when they called themselves the Sassanids, so it's not surprising that when they took the remnants of the Talibs rebellion and absorbed them, they also integrated their corpse worshipping ways.
