Both Amina and Ferris are the types who try to act adult in order to seem serious. Amina is an aimless airhead who ran away from Church because she found a cleric's life too boring. And now she's stuck in hell because she was too poor to say no to a quest and too proud to admit she was wrong and go back to adult life in a Monastery.
Ferris is a dickhead and a huge egomaniac who larps greatest wizard that ever did or will exist with 0 empathy towards others. His hubris got him expelled from mage academy and instead of getting his ego checked, the doubled down and decided to learn by himself. Both are the types that act as adults in order to be taken seriously. John was the only other actual adult next to Arrianne but he's dead now..

>This is bad, at least Jiu-jitsu tend to be harsh on this, promotions only came after every brown belt of higher consider your can advance.
We have that too, Only black belts at least 2 degrees above you can grade you. But that starts failing once the martial art starts losing it's popularity and people need money to run dojos

>What are some red flags or signs of a "bullshido sensei" besides reviews from other students?
Hmmm...Other students are unreliable. Sadly, the only way to know if your sensei is a hack if you know the martial art and you obviously cannot know it if you have no experience. I have some red flags but I don't know if these would help, especially if you study the art historically and not for practical use.
1) Constantly avoids talking about real life application
2) 0 sparring experience whatsoever
3) Trashing other dojos/martial arts without any proof of sparring/duel
4) Not letting the students attend other dojos/seminars
5) (this especially for japanese arts) Not being able to source the techniques (historical use of them).
6) Lack of understanding the language the art comes from (for example not being able to explain and/or translate japanese techniques/commands to your students and switching completely to native language)
7) Not teaching mental aspects of the art (stresstesting, reading the room, combat state vs civilian state, etc...)
8) Passing their students just so they can keep the place runing
9) (if there is a sparing/tournament option for the art) Forcing students to attend tournaments just to gain medals and training them to score medals instead of learning the art itself
10) Refusing to acknowledge how much the physical differences in people can impact your performance (BIG AIKIDO PROBLEM)
There can be more...but I think for at least half of these...if you're a beginner with 0 martial arts experience, you won't be able to notice until something really bad happens but by that point it's usually too late.
