Before the Jews came in, Palestine was a largely agrarian Ottoman backwater and had basic stone brick and mud buildings housing its residents, like rural Arab areas today. Most of the Jews who moved in came in the 30s and 40s, when Bauhaus architecture and commieblocks were state of the art (especially among Jewish intellectuals, of course) because they were supposed to be a more egalitarian way of living (lots of the first Jewish settlers were secular leftists), so most of Israel was built that way from scratch.
