A bunch of Hetalia cosplayers were doing a photoshoot at Anime Boston in 2010. Their photoshoot location had to be changed for some reason or another, so they eventually found a new spot that was a block from a holocaust memorial. These cosplayers were dressed up as Germany and Prussia, so they decided to jokingly take some photos while doing nazi salutes.
These photos caused a huge shitstorm in the Hetalia fanbase and caused a lot of people in them to move away from it. These ex-Hetalia fans (mostly tumblr users) then go and look for something to fill the void of shipping in their hearts.
It was around this time Act 5 was starting, fully introducing the trolls. The previously small Homestuck fandom on tumblr suddenly balloons in size with ex-Hetalia fans who only give a shit about the trolls. Everything from then on is a domino effect.
