The 1940s Wonder Woman was supposed to be normal-sized guardian angel. Her Paradie Island Amazon sisters are sort of angels-in-training. There's a comic book story where she meets and fights some genuine Greek-type Amazons who tower over her. Also, I think she was supposed to have movie star looks consistent with the liberated Pre-Code era like Claudette Colbert.
