Douglas and Renee never did nothing to improve their own situation and neglected their children. All those choices made out of scorn ended up killing them. Douglas is particularly sad, because from what we can pick up from his life is that he struggled with his parents, failed to carry on his life by himself, and ended up as a broken spirit with nothing to look forward to. It's tragic because it didn't have to be this way. He could have turned the entire tide by himself, but gave up way too early for a nugget of solace overshadowed by doubt and fear.
