>But you fully embrace the suffering. It's like you're an actual emotional masocist, you want to delve in the suck itself.

I'm not actively seeking it but if the story demands it then I have to oblige. My absolute favorite show is Tsuioku-hen (the Rurouni Kenshin prequel OVA) and it's great for every reason you can like something for like sound, art direction, sakuga, setting, but the story particularly is absolutely mandatory to be sad with the way it's set up from the start as well as the character in question and the time period (assassin in the Bakkumatsu) otherwise you simply cheapen it to the point it just becomes generic samurai slop.

I'm guessing you haven't seen it cause going by what you described so far you would have clocked out in the first 2 minutes but it is a perfect example of someone that had it coming. The story is about an orphan that gets rescued from bandits right before he was about to be killed (everyone he was with was dead already and he was surrounded by corpses) and his rescuer, a master swordsman, seeing his devotion (he was told to go to the nearest village and just live there but instead he found the kid digging the graves for everyone himself) decided to bring him under his wing and train the kid and the most important factor of that training was "do not get involved with the outside world, swordfighting doesn't save lives" and naturally what does the kid do once he's all grown up and an expert? Goes against his master's advice and joins the revolution... and that's how the tragedy begins.

Someone described Edgerunners as bittersweet euphoric depression but I think this applies to Tsuioku-hen infinitely more, minus the bittersweet part. There's something in the way the tragedy is delivered and how the protagonist just pushes further after the fact that's simply unmatched by anything else, it could have been turned into a happy story with a generic revenge plot but then it would just be like any other show.
