Much more different. I won't say much that isn't in the manual. In FFLI Humans can only raise stats from bought potions, Mutants gain stats after battles, and Monsters need to consume monster meat and it'll transform them to a completely different stat and skill load out.

The Gameboy games are short, about 12 or so hours.
