To be honest this defense would make sense if this was the rule and not an exception enjoyed by gays. Like, at least 90% of the pop is heterosexual and are revolted/disgusted by the actual act of homosexuality, even if they support "gay rights" or whatever. I honestly can't think of anything else that is considered viscerally revolting by majority of society but is tolerated.
