We have failed to do religion for at least 4,000 years. We never actually recovered from the Bronze Age collapse. What you call religion is what survived from the accumulation of inquiry to reconstruct civilization. What we are stuck with is an embarrassing abomination of some fantasy without name that people fill with their imaginations.
