Funnily enough, I missed this post due to having spent the last month or two fixing a hole the size of 70's prog rock in my general education. If you want a straight-up recommendation, I've taken quite a liking to Be Bop Deluxe. Anyway, what I do is search for something like "best/most underrated albums of genre/year", skim through the lists and discussions, and proceed to listen to what seems interesting. A lot of cataloguing sites and, for newer bands, Bandcamp, have a "similar artists" function which provides further options to explore as does checking out the other bands and side projects of the musicians involved in bands I like. Also, having discovered something new and out of my usual haunts, opening up a Youtube with a fresh private browser and letting autoplay just take me to places works too. And much like back in the day people bought albums based on cover art alone, there's not even money involved in clicking an attention-catching thumbnail.
