So in Warcraft, the Empire of Arathor was the first great human power on Azeroth, a few thousand years ago, it covered most of the Eastern Kingdoms except for Quel'thalas and the troll controlled areas. They warred with the trolls and were allies with dwarves and the high elves, from whom they learned arcane magic and took up worship of the Light. Its capital was Strom, now Stromgarde. Eventually the Empire weakened and split apart into the seven human kingdoms; Stormwind, Lorderon, Gilneas, Kul Tiras, Stromgarde, Alterac and Dalaran. The last descendent of the ancient Arathi royal bloodline was Anduin Lothar, so it's fully extinguished now.
UNTIL Blizzard needed a new major faction for the mysterious unknown continent. So now in the backstory, an expedition of Arathi, consisting of both humans and high elves, during the Empire's era left Azeroth and wound up on the unknown continent, and were unable to return because of permanent storms surrounding it. They established the Arathi Empire there and have thrived ever since, completely unknown to the Eastern Kingdoms. A few decades ago, a fleet of them were caught in a whirlpool and wound up underground in Khaz Algar, where they founded Hallowfell. The new Arathi Empire appears to be extremely devout in Light worship and kowtow to their emperor. So they are being set up as future bad guys, probably after the Worldsoul Saga trilogy of expansions.
