I can see both sides of this argument.
Where You want to feel powerful dominating weaker players or enforcing the "no this is how you play the game" aspect.
And I can also see the side that just wants to play strong opponents more, when you become so good at a fighting game that there are only a hand ful of people that can even get your blood pumping it gets old after a while and you cannot teach everyone the game or force a player who wont adapt to adapt.
Its like you trained this long for stronger battles but most of your battles just become boring and dull.
But Maybe I'm just playing the wrong game where beating up lesser players isn't interesting.
I feel like the correct solution to these problems were just to make the characters stronger and give them better tools in general so that when that player did manage to sweep you or something it was worth a lot more. The games now are very reliant on combos and bad players are simply trying to land big combos when you will NEVER allow them to get that close to you. Simple things need to be strong again, theyre too weak and the "ground" is being made up for by stupid jumpscare mechanics rather than character tools being harder to deal with.
