I do think 100% it was meant to be his final season/series. I do think Yayuma had a part to play, but i think his role was different.

The anime was 100% meant to end with DP. Dawn was ready to go back to Kanto with Ash, their relationship was different compared to all the others, etc. I think Yayuma wanted to keep the status quo for as long as possible. The BW rest is part of that.

In DP you can really tell when the shift happens; they set up a few story elements early in the series, but then either completely stop talking about them or change them. Cythia was way more involved than any other champion ever and was built up to battle Ash at the end, but didn't. tobibus came out of nowhere to spite us all.

Atsuhiro Tomioka had a massive part in it all. Ash and Dawn's relationship, DP, his potential end in DP, etc. I mean in JN Tomioka was the one who did all the Dawn return eps and specials, her first and last BW ep, and he did the finals in JN where Dawn returned. IMO a very clear sign that he was originally going to be doing the ending. Pikachu x bunnery was cute also.

The JN ending was fine, i guess. While official Ash will never age and is always on his journey etc, we got the heavy implication that Dawn was the final winner.

DP should have ended it all.
