Princess Marie-Esméralda of Belgium is a journalist, author, and documentary-maker. She is also a campaigner for “environmental activism” as well as the “rights” of women and indigenous people. On October 10, 2019, she was arrested an Extinction Rebellion sit-in protest at Trafalgar Square, but was then later released without charge. She has been the Ambassador for the World Wildlife Fund for Nature UK and the organization’s Belgium and Stop Ecocide International. She is also a member of the Club of Rome.

She is the youngest child of the late King Leopold III of Belgium and his second wife, the Princess of Réthy, Mary Lilian Henriette Lucie Josephine Ghislaine Baels. This makes her a direct descendant of the Belgian branch of the royal House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Her grandfather was Albert I of Belgium, and her great-great grandfather was King Leopold I of Belgium, the first king of the Belgians.

Chair of Friendship Belgium, an NGO working in Bangladesh with the most vulnerable people through programs of education, health, women’s empowerment and climate adaptation, she is the Honorary President of CARE Belgium, Ambassador for WWF UK and WWF Belgium and Stop Ecocide International.
