It's bizarre that people can't take her motivation as genuine reaction to the understanding that their society is flawed and that the place she is being groomed to take in it is indeed comfortable and safe but fundamentally reliant on the exclusion of people like Nyaan. She hides her face and doesn't try to draw any attention to her success as a clan battler. The only opinions she cares about are those from people who seem to follow their own path. She's not rebelling for attention, she's rebelling because it is right to do so and she feels it even if she has no clue what it actually means. She's given up on getting her mom to understand and doesn't even try to deal with her.
