This is my common trick, too. I learned it way back when I started stacking Spawn inside of regular troops (e.g. Beastmen and as WoC). With how goofy AI is in this game (as in, in manuals), perhaps the smaller troops help slow down or tie-up the enemy to keep them still more often and therefore get attacked by your larger units without them having to restart the animation repeatedly (which is common if you watch closely).
