because all wars are about protecting the state's interest instead of "defending the people"
there will never be any war that's about "defending the people"
under or not under colonialism, the governing power will oppress the people whenever they can if given the chance to do so
indian defended their homeland just for the state to turn the country into today shit hole
vietnam won the US war just for the state to gun down people they label as "traitor of the state" in order to steal their land
china escaped colonialism just to fall under an authoritarian system that restrict everything they deem as "rebellion against the state"

the point is, to participate in a war is to participate in a meaningless struggle of power where you will always be the pawn no matter the outcome
