I'm thinking 50's and before. Academia was largely white male and very traditional. Social sciences as we know them really took off in the 60s onwards, and with them the leftward drift. It infected the rest of society. Foucault was a massive influence to sociology, and he was a proto-sociologist himself, even though he was counted more as a philosopher and post-structuralist.
