How much of those light areas is actually inhabitable? Like not just desert or mountains or where you simply couldn't survive without large scale infrastructure projects?
Never been to Wyoming but have done a lot of driving elsewhere. If you want real absolute nothing you'd need to see Alaska. That's where people go when their town population hits 20 people per square mile and it feels too "big city" for them.

A tiny island that's over 1000 years old and was also the hub of a centuries long empire. Not a whole lot of opportunity to get open land there and I don't think there ever will be. Europe needs to bring back proper world wars again to cull the surplus men. More women and land to go around for the survivors.
