I guess it's more that old rover seems incredibly competent, influential and powerful (including controlling the literal gods of every region), if he wanted to disappear with his old self he would take the appropriate measures to not be immediately spoiled. Since he erased his info and even wrote messages to his future self we know it was not without any preparation.
