Syd knew how to maintain design cohesion. The shape reminds me of something like a Zulu shield and then he carried over that design language throughout the rest of the mobile suit. Then he added finer details and lines to compliment it while sparingly utilizing contrasting elements purposefully (the cross in the middle).
