Only in part, that is we didn't entertain the delusion that there wouldn't be any war at all but we had the very prevalent delusion that a century of Pax Americana was upon us.

I know that it might seems ridiculous but in Europe at the time we really looked up to our Yank cousins, we thought them less intellectually capable than us for certain but for some reason they looked more practical, good with money, better capitalists than us, they effectively won the Cold War against the Communists.

The idea of America as Israel's crackwhore came much later.
