Everything we know about Elbaf makes more sense if time moves faster outside of the country, possibly at a 3x rate, and if there were a lot more savage assholes with ancient giant blood waltzing around basically right up until Carmel arrived to the island. If the time dilation is confirmed, however, the question is exactly what prevented the Holy Knights from recognizing the islands properties if they spent extensive time working with Harald for whatever purpose they got into his good graces with.
