US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Politico that despite the US not taking any existing sanctions off Russia, it's not the time for the US to impose new ones because if the US "come in and crush them with more sanctions, we probably lose our ability to talk to them about the ceasefire. And then who's talking to them? Because they don't talk to anybody else in Europe. They don't talk to anybody else in the world who is on our side of this thing and views it the way we do."

Secretary Rubio added that President Trump "wants to give it every opportunity to have influence over the Russian Federation towards a ceasefire. And that's the option he's trying to preserve, because it's the option of peace."

In fact, new US sanctions are a way of talking to Russia. Russia does not understand and care for dialogue and diplomacy. The only thing Russia understands is strength. When Russia commits horrible war crimes in Ukraine and is not punished for it, Russia considers its counterpart weak and doubles its efforts. This results not just in more deaths and destruction for Ukraine but in further collapse of the international order system and global order.

I agree that the United States and the US President have the opportunities and resources to talk to Russia like no one else can. Sanctions against Russia and more weapons for Ukraine will be talking to Russia in a strong language Russia will understand.
