Like another anon said, faerie's (fae) are more of a catch all term. Shit like Banshee's and Ghost Dogs and Dullahan all fit into that too. Seelie and Unseelie Courts categorize them a bit more, but that's a lot to get into. The elves seen in things like LOTR are probably primarily stylized after beings like the Faerie Queen Fand that the Celtic Hero Cu Chulainn cheated on his wife with. Probably mixed with some influence from the likes of Freyja from Nordic mythology and Vanir traditions. The Fae Queen that turned Tam Lin into her Faerie Knight (A Welsh tale if I'm not remembering incorrectly?) is probably another part of why modern elves now have a penchant for sorcery, forest residences and capricious trickery. Though they kind of decided to white-wash away the whole 'fae men are coming for your daughters' side of it, probably felt too uncomfortable for what now is seen as a whimsical species. All of this intermingled with more generalist folklore, of course.
