That's not an embellishment. That's an outright fabrication stolen from someone else's lore. The entire story of Ballam is that he's supposed to worship some other monotheist religion but in history he was a polytheist. You're also talking about myth, but then immediately trying to pass that myth off as history. It's fable or its real. It belongs to one or the other. It's all clear cut, there's no muddling here.
