“Abdul Khaliq el-Hanif, the 4th King of Jordan since 1999. 50 years old, married to Fikra el-Abdoo. Considered to be a direct descendant of the prophet Muhammad and widely popular with the Jordanian people for his liberal reforms.
You slip one of the pictures out, examining it like you haven’t already seen him face to face before.
“We are currently investigating him over his recent actions regarding Operation Judgement Day and his uncooperative actions towards the United States, but we all know that already. You’ll notice in those papers, Mr. President…”
The man points to the pile in front of you. The one that you’ve pulled from the classified package.
“…you’ll notice there’s some familiar names in them.”
You skim through the lines of text, keeping your eyes open for any reoccurring names. It’s not long before you notice them.
“el-Uddin…al-Hai.”
“That’s right, sir. It took some time for us to find some of this information, and even longer to verify it—never mind piecing it all together…but now we are very confident that we have a good understanding of the situation for you: On December 21st 2011, one of King Abdul’s sons went missing while on a vacation to Lebanon. A search between both governments in coordination took place, yet nobody found him for the duration of the search, which was suddenly called off on January 4th. We can’t say for certain why the search was called off, but what we do know is that the Jordanian ambassador to the United States was recalled back to Amman on the 12th.”
You lean forward in your seat, planting both elbows on the table.
“So you’re saying that they might’ve known about this attack in advance?”
“Perhaps, sir. Though it’s just as likely that Abdul was instructed to recall the ambassador by another individual without any prior knowledge of the attack.”
“Do go on.”
The man clears his throat.
“Right. Going back to Abdul potentially having been instructed, the reason we believe this to be the case is due to a certain collection of private phone conversations between the king and an unknown caller.”
“What line was this on?”
“The king’s personal phone line. You see, we didn’t think much about it at first when we got into the records, but that’s when we noticed some unusual choice words and phrases.”
One of the men nearest to you leans across the table, pulling one of the papers out from the pile and tapping on one side of it. You lean forward, grabbing the paper to get a close look at the list of so-called choice words and phrases.
“You think these are code or something?”
“We do. You see sir, these specific words and phrases appear constantly in the few calls we managed to find. We have yet to decipher the real meaning behind most of them, but you’ll be informed the moment we do.”
“Much appreciated.”
You recline in your seat, rubbing your temple.
“So…how this all connect to those two?”
