Or y'know they could just be from the really ancient past and sidestep all the timetravel fuckery entirely, but they'd have to live a really long time or some shit. I've also heard they have a sort of collective consciousness that exists in a cloud form and they can just kind choose when to incarnate into an actual (gray) body whenever they need a physical one.
