To "complement" (not compliment) in this context means to create a more well-rounded and versatile collection by selecting a watch that fills a gap left by the other. What I mean is that the Explorer is a little too sporty to wear for formal occasions. In that sense it's "complemented" by a dress watch (say, a Master Control) rather than another sport-ish watch (a Datejust, which is basically a slightly more classed up version of the Explorer).
At this price range, I want an in-house movement automatic, so a quartz watch by a fashion brand doesn't fit the bill.
