“…I don’t know what the LT would do.” And you honestly don’t. The LT is a Company man to the core, but he has never hid his ruthless streak. If it came between sacrificing one man, even a Company man, if that man put the others at risk… “You really think Bones would go running to his rebel friends and give them the lowdown on the Company plan?”
“I doubt that he would go that far.” Crane says with a shake of his head. “But he is going to be asked some very hard questions by his newfound friends when we start plundering critical League supplies.”
“We might have some movement on that front.” You relay Wasp’s proposal of hitting a mapped out Savis depot as an alternative to the LT’s initial plan to take supplies and transport directly from the rebels, which sounds like a good idea to Crane.
“That would go a long way towards addressing the tensions.” Crane nods, stroking his chin. “Yes. That may be enough. Convincing the Lieutenant of the merits of Pathfinder Wasp’s proposal is now doubly important, but reasons the man may not fully appreciate.”
“Might be enough?” Convincing the LT is one thing, but you want to know exactly what is required to make sure your people are 100% in line.
“Bones is a good man, a man that looks for a cause worth fighting for. The fall of the Earth Republic and it’s ideals left a hole for him, I think. I do not believe the life of the mercenary filled that hole to his satisfaction, he may have found something closer to what he was missing in this new movement of the liberated slaves. When the time comes for us to go, leaving those newfound comrades of his behind, I am not sure he will come willingly.”
You scratch your head, you hadn’t previously treated the prospect of one your own just not leaving seriously until now. “If he stays here he’s a dead man. He’s gotta know that, right?”
“I think that the fear of certain death is enough reason for you and I, and likely enough for the others.” Crane shrugs, only someone that knows him as well as you do would be able to detect his uncertainty. “As I said, Bones is a good man at heart. Good men tend to believe in causes like this one, and good men have died willingly for far less.”
