Maybe if you word it like that but not really. 99% of Nintendo characters are inoffensive, harmless toddler huggables (even Link is basically a eunuch today, Captain Falcon is dead despite his IP having endless potential, Fire Emblem protags haven't looked masculine since PoR), so it was naturally part of DK's charm that he his signature expression was a bit more masculine, focused and stoic. And that's just a good design for a gorilla anyway. The official 2D art still understands this. It's the 3D model that's like a glitch in the matrix and just looks kinda retarded.
