Many wrote that the Russian foreign ministry allegedly demanded the withdrawal of NATO troops from the Baltic states in order to end the war against Ukraine.

It was claimed that Sergey Ryabkov, Russia's deputy foreign minister, made this statement in an interview with TASS.

In fact, there was no such direct quote mentioning the Baltic states in Ryabkov's interview.

Nevertheless, he used vague wording, saying that "it is impossible to resolve the conflict until NATO leaves." Responding to a question about the possible withdrawal of 10,000 American troops from Eastern Europe, he repeated the narrative about NATO's non-expansion:

"I would like to remind you that the proposals we sent to Washington and Brussels in December 2021 included the imperative of legal, legally binding, and long-term guarantees that NATO would not expand eastward, as well as demands not to deploy strike weapons near Russian borders. There were other components as well. I am simply saying that our position on this issue remains unchanged. In any case, a reduction in NATO's contingent in Eastern Europe would probably benefit the security of the entire continent," he said.
