I've been thinking about the concept of the "femcel" in comics, especially when compared to how male geek culture is portrayed. It's interesting how male-dominated nerd groups in comics often come with a layer of social isolation and self-sabotage, while similar female groups don't always face the same kind of narrative tension or struggle.
-Take Eltingville Club, for example. It's a group of hardcore nerds who are so self-absorbed and gatekeep-y that they end up pushing everyone away even each other. They take their niche hobbies way too seriously, to the point of being toxic. Jerry, the quiet and more socially awkward one, is arguably the most sympathetic character, but he still ends up stuck with these guys, getting dragged down and never really getting a chance to grow or form normal relationships.
-Then there’s Anime Club by KC Green. It's essentially the same story but with a focus on anime fandom. Again, you’ve got a group of weebs who are so consumed by their niche interests and petty drama that they alienate others. Clyde, the new guy, seems like he has potential at first maybe he’ll grow past it. But nope, he just gets sucked into their dysfunction and ends up wasting his time and potential.
