Ukraine Says Russia Handed Over Remains of Its Own Soldiers in Body Swap
Ukraine's Interior Ministry has accused Russia of transferring the remains of its own soldiers under the guise of deceased Ukrainian service members during a recent exchange of war dead.
On Thursday, Ukrainian forensic experts reported finding the remains of at least 16 Russian military personnel among a larger group of bodies handed over by Moscow. The ministry stated that its experts identified the remains through "chevrons, tattoos with typical Russian symbolism, elements of uniforms, and other signs of belonging to the Russian Armed Forces." It has happened before, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stating in June that Russia had previously transferred the bodies of at least 20 of its own soldiers.
The discovery was made following a large-scale repatriation on Thursday, July 17, in which Ukraine received the bodies of 1,000 individuals, while Russia received 19. The exchange was conducted as part of the Istanbul agreements, mediated by Turkey.
In a statement, Ukraine's Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War confirmed it had received the 1,000 bodies, noting the Russian side had claimed they were all Ukrainian citizens. The headquarters said all repatriated remains would undergo forensic examination and identification by law enforcement and Interior Ministry experts.
Ukrainian officials, including the Interior Minister, have previously stated that Russia has repeatedly handed over the remains of its own soldiers mixed with Ukrainian ones, which significantly complicates the identification process. The Interior Ministry has urged relatives of missing Russian soldiers to contact the International Commission on Missing Persons.
