i dont think theyre modifying core software , US military avionics are actually pretty open and easy to integrate other systems to you have public MIL-STD documents on how all the protocols work. you can literally plug in your laptop into an F35's onboard ethernet switch and send it targets/markers using a US/NATO wide standard message type called CoT.

the difference between the israeli F35 deal and the other ones is israel has an integration plane (special one of a kind plane with various built in debug/telemetry tools created to add new functionality/hardware/weapons to the plane)). only USA and israel have such planes and pic related is the USA one
