Oh, I didn't understand what you wanted.

Tried a whole bunch of stuff that didn't work, finally just made up "robot eyes" and together with "solid eyes" and that seems to work on more 3D-looking styles at least, on v-pred 1.0 and 102d. Anything flat color, more style-biased checkpoints, or trying to mechanize an existing character just reverts to regular eyes.
