Only in the sense that the plot would not move along without TB, but Phainon would obviously not get to where he ended up without his other relationships. He hallucinates farewells to all of his friends, clearly cherishes them, and is still thinking of them in his light cone. The end of Amphoreus will bring back all of them, and Phainon would definitely care for them no less than he does now.
