Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is a Filipino academic and politician who served as the President of the Philippines from 2001 to 2010. She was previously the vice president of the Philippines from 1998 to 2001. She was Filipino senator from 1992 to 1998. After her presidency, she was elected as the representative of Pampanga's 2nd district in 2010 and continues to serve in this role. After her Presidency, she was elected as a congressional representative of Pampanga's 2nd district. She has been both the speaker of the House from 2018 to 2019, and as its deputy speaker. She attended the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in 2002.

Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s father, Diosdado Pangan Macapagal Sr., was Filipino lawyer and politician who also served as President of the Philippines, from 1961 to 1965, and Vice President of the Philippines from 1957 to 1961. Gloria and her father are both distant descendants of Don Juan Macapagal, the great-grandson and the most eminent descendant of the last ruling Lakan of Tondo, Don Carlos Lacandola. Macapagal aided in the suppression of the Kapampangan Revolt of 1660, the Pangasinan Revolt of Don Andres Malong, and the Ilocano Revolt of 1661. Don Juan Macapagal was also one of the few natives of the Philippines to become an encomendero or a feudal lord under the Spanish crown. Mikey Arroyo and Dato Arroyo were also descendants of the Macapagal bloodline who served as Filipino congressmen.
