The VDV was using on obsolete air assault doctrine made up in the 60s when most support personnel were armed with the ubiquitous pistol caliber submachineguns of WW2, these would be unable to penetrate the soft body armor of the time, and thus they felt they could overrun NATO airbases. This doctrine was updated for new armor and the replacement of SMGs with carbine assault rifles but all airborne doctrine of this nature is flawed and has been abandoned by all other parties because outside of total surprise it just ends with you getting pinned down and cut to ribbons by crew-served weapons that the MPs now have in great numbers. Airdropping greatly limits your ammunition capacity, and thus it is very hard to suppress the foe.
