In the USA, personal rights have been accorded to corporations, and this is partly based on interpretations of the 1st and 14th Amendements so it's not out of the question that an "object" could be considered a person, especially given that religion-based concepts of 'soul" and so on are very unlikely to be given any real weight in the current socio-policial climate.
