I've been calling this Power Rangers pairing, where you have a mostly white cast with one Black Ranger (usually a guy) and one Yellow Ranger (usually a girl). On the occasion, you may get a Latino or something else thrown in there, but it's pretty prevalent even today. The best example of this is probably Star Trek, which had this from the original series through Enterprise, though it was less so in TNG and DS9 since Nurse Ogawa and Keiko were recurring rather than part of the main cast.
