It is not only about cheaper missiles but also the stock of older AIM-120's (A/B/C5) being limited and using C7/C8/D/D3 models to down Gerans is downright comical in terms of expenses and amount of missiles in stockpiles.

Not to mention that using AIM-120's to down Geraniums is also eating into the potential supply of missiles for NASAM systems.
