Imam Husayn faced certain death in battle against thousands on behalf of the oppressed in order to preserve the entire religion of Islam.
Islam was essentially sold out for the benefit of a tribe called the Quryash, the tribe of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) who had oppressed him for preaching Islam. When he died, Shias followed his family as the true successors of Islam, and his family was oppressed. Including Imam Husayn.
