Several ways. First, look at the base model. SD1.5 is old and busted, newer checkpoints tend to use something like Illustrious (which itself is basically a version of SDXL). Picture related. Second, look at the sample images provided and more importantly at the image gallery under the model. This gives you an idea of what the checkpoint is capable of. Third is, indeed, just trial and error. Some models are really good at specific things, others are more general. Something that might workl perfectly for my images isn't necessarily the best choice for you, but that's something you can only find out by trying things yourself.
