Yes it's, environmentalism, mankind not living in harmony with nature. The Echidnas and Chaos, Gerald and Black Doom, the Duke of Soleanna and Mephiles, the Seedarians becoming the Meta Rex, all fit nicely into this theme. "Durr aliens" fucks the themes up.

See this is exactly my problem. The emeralds being connected to the reincarnation cycle of the earth itself is cool because Sonic is a friend of nature and he has an affinity to the emeralds. But you drag aliens into it and now everything becomes alien magic.
